Marcella, this is amazing and my heart is with you and Neo. I have written often about the benefit of holistic (truly, not just by name) vets, a species-appropriate diet, raising healthy pets, and even (dare I say it) purchasing a pure blooded animal, bred from a line who have not been injected for a couple of generations if possible. I was also a human society person -- or one who found litters outside our door because we lived on the outskirts of town and people thought it would be appropriate to drop their litters off in the country. So after my last 2 rescues suffered so much from who knows what trauma before they were taken to the shelter, then desexed, chipped, and vaccinated and fed kibble for who knows how long. After we brought them home, they had so many health issues for 10-12 years, I think mostly from vaccines and more vaccines and the most up to date vaccines, and food.
We are lucky in Marin to have some amazing holistic vets, and I studied online with Dr. Will Falconer - a holistic homeopathic vet. We have reversed some serious conditions in our older dog through working with two local vets, both aligned with our values about the whole agenda out there, and have brought home two unjabbed puppies who were naturally bred and reared. The pups are about a year and eat raw meaty bones and other raw food. The older beautiful pup who had so many health issues, does have cataracts, and a year ago the vet recommending removing all his teeth and one eye immediately. We collaborated with our two local holistic vets and he still has those teeth and his eye, and loves his daily walks and snuggles.
We did wind up with fluids for our elder kitty, about 16, who had lots of vaccinations and horrible food when we didn't know better. Neo is luck to have you as his people, and you to have him. Thank you and this time, I am doing better, because I know better. I was as mind-controlled about animal health as I was about my own health. Kudos to you, and beautiful article. With love, Marcia (I worked on SB277 when you were a major player) x
Catinfo.org, by the vet Lisa Pierson, is a great resource. She gives a lot of information about making a nutritionally complete raw food diet. She used to give her cats canned Wellness chicken or turkey food, so I did that as well, adding a few strips of raw chicken every night, then returning the Pyrex dish to the freezer.
The Natural Cat talks about the benefits of sub-cutaneous fluid infusion with Ringer’s Lactate. I gave our previous cat that several days a week for the last three years of his life, starting with the first symptoms of kidney failure when he was 18. He lived until nearly 21, when he got an inoperable oral cancer. He didn’t die of kidney disease.
Pierson gives a lot of information on minimizing vaccines, but thinks the feline distemper vaccine is necessary to prevent the horrible death of many cats. But only one dose for life, two if started before four months old. Jean Dodds also has a lot of good information. Merial Purevax vaccines are unadjuvanted and safer, but still cause some deaths, because all vaccines for any species cause often dangerous inflammation.
Homeo Animal, in Canada, makes amazingly effective homeopathic remedies for dozens of conditions. I can attest that its Heart remedy cured our parakeet Sprite’s heart failure and gave him three more years of healthy life. The testimonials from customers at its website are amazing. The company is under attack from the envious allopathic industry: I think it recently changed its name.
They no longer sell many of their products at their US outlet, but you can still buy them at their Canafian one, including remedies for cancer. And you can call and talk to them, they are cery kind and knowledgeable.
I’d also say that if the cat will be euthanized, to ask tge vet what they will use. I assumed they’d give them a sedative first, but that turned out not to be the case. They came to my house to do it, but held Felicio down to insert a catheter. He was frightened and in pain, yowled and tried to scratch them. Absolutely not what I had wanted for his peaceful final moments of drifting to sleep. I was shocked and hurt, and it made my profound grief at his death much worse. I later read that they could have given him a shot of what they use to anesthetize them for surgery. I will be sure to ask for that in the future.
I’m glad you’re staying so near Neo and relishing every second you have w him. My sweet Sophie passed unexpectedly on 2/6/24. I am beyond broken. She was my life, my child, my heart and soul, worse than any human loss. 💔😪
Excellent post. So sorry about Neo. He looks so sweet. I really love a raw diet and homeopathy for cats.
I follow the Vital Animal podcast with great episodes like: "Your cats -- actually canaries?," "When prevention causes disease," "How to get your vet needs met," and "Fire your vet!" It's a wealth of information on how to support the health of cats (and dogs!).
Love this. Thank you for sharing. We lost my cat of seven years in 2021. Last year we lost both of our 13 year old Labs. All had to be decisions to let go. We still grieve often. Hugs and much empathy from us.
I’ve always believed all the vaccines they give to pets is harmful. I had a dog that I took to the vet for itching and he was given a steroid shot and very shortly afterwards he developed Addison’s Disease. In my research I learned it could be brought on by steroids. Poor guy almost died from his first adrenal crisis and wasn’t very healthy for the rest of his short life. I’ve had cats all my life and always end up with strays that just wander into my life. I currently have 3 cats and I rarely take them to the vet. One is a cat I fostered ( rescued a mama cat and her 5 kittens) that was vetted through Fur Kids and they tend to be pretty aggressive with all the kitten shots. The other 2 only got the rabies vaccination because they can’t be spayed without it. Other than that, they are vaccine virgins 😹. My oldest cat lived 18 years and the one with the shortest lifespan died at 14 years (they said he had a mass in his stomach) and I had to make the choice to euthanize Holcomb in the end 😿. Thanks for all of the great information and links to holistic vets. Blessings to you and Neo!
What a beautiful kitty. All of our cats died at about age 9 until I stopped vaccinating them. Our wonderful orange male lived 19 years after we got him at the shelter, an adult of unknown age, despite being vaccinated at least at the shelter. We also fed dry food. Our current kitty, also adopted as an adult, is addicted to dry food and won't eat fresh. I tried for months. I do give her canned food with the least amount of carbohydrate I can find. She loves the fish especially but I worry about mercury. Thank you for sharing your story. And for being a warrior for truth!
What a handsome cat... He's so lucky to have you as his care giver. Our last cat passed away one day short of turning 19. That was rough. Never gave her a shot after we adopted her around 4yo. We have two new kitties now, both around 2, and one of them has some skin issue which we suspect might come from the very few shots she got when I felt guided by the vet to administer. The vet now admits the gut microbiome imbalance she got tested for could be a result of her shots... No more shots for us.
I learn't similar from Catherine O'Driscoll of Canine Health Concern (UK) regarding dogs, it's much the same info for cats too. Members also include Patricia Jordan and Jean Dodds (USA). Going from Lucy and Jade who lived to 8 and 5 respectively to Max and William who lived to 14 and 15. Holistic health, fresh food and absolutely no vaccines (toxins) is the way to go. I wish I'd known this in the beginning. Best Wishes for your beautiful sassy looking Neo.
My little Rascal passed away in 2011. I first started questioning vaccines because of him. When he started getting sick I told the vet what I thought and she agreed that he shouldn’t have any more. That took me “down the rabbit hole”. What a journey it has been!
In terms of food, there’s a book written by a Canadian lady, “Food Pets Die For” which is well worth the read. I was horrified what I read, although if I were to read it now I probably wouldn’t be at all shocked given what I’ve learned over the last number of decades.
Penny and Lynn am so sorry for your loss. They remain in your heart forever and for me not a day goes by that I don’t think of Ras. Hugs…

Aww, I just wrote about the loss of my cat - Pangur Bán. Thanks for all the story and info, Marcella! I miss having a cat so very much. http://banjocatcreative.com/of-mice-and-chicks/
